A Way to Prove Loyalty?

PARALLEL STORY

Before the formation of the all-Japanese 442nd, all-Black army regiments also served their country overseas while facing prejudice at home.

Known as the Buffalo Soldiers, these troops fought overseas in the late 1800s’ Spanish-American War and Philippine-American War.

Some Black newspapers, organizations, and leaders questioned African Americans’ service; why should they help the U.S. create an empire that further subjugated people of color? Other African Americans spoke in favor of Black troops’ service. They hoped a show of patriotism abroad could help African Americans gain more freedom, respect, and equality at home.

Buffalo Soldiers stand in formation in 1899, after fighting in the Spanish-American War in Cuba.
