- This activity introduces students to the theme of belonging and exclusion in the United States through a guided analysis of a photograph, taken by Dorothea Lange in March 1942, of an Oakland, California, storefront where the Japanese American owner displayed a sign declaring “I am an American.” Students will have the opportunity to practice a “close viewing” routine they can also use to analyze images while touring the exhibition.
