AIAA Classroom Activity 1: Activating Prior Knowledge and Building Context

Regardless of grade level, your students will likely approach the “AM I AN AMERICAN OR AM I NOT?” exhibition with a range of prior knowledge and experience with the topic of the WWII Japanese American Incarceration. For some students, this might be an introduction to history they have never learned about; for others, it may be a review. For some, this topic may feel distant; for others, it may be personal. This activity will allow you to learn what your students already know about the topic and their connections and associations with this history regardless of their knowledge. It will also give the class a chance to build context together and share questions that their visit to the exhibition can help address.

Designed for students in grades 7-12 with adaptations for grades 4-6.
